The University-Union Club building at 539 Broadway, built between the years 1888-1890, i san early example of Colonial Revival architecture in and Washington State, and is a
significant example of the work of architects Whidden and Lewis. The building has a high degree of integrity and therefore has the ability to convey its association with the boom period in Tacoma as Washington gained statehood in 1889. The building was home to the Union Club, a social and business club that included as members the most influential men of the time. The building is sited in an important location: quite visible and near other significant landmarks. Main changes include the exterior addition of 1906 and
building alterations of 1924. In 1936 the University and Union Clubs joined and remained in the building until 1985. Subsequent changes have much modified the bay side of the building, but facing Broadway many of the unique massing and architectural details remain intact. The building continues to convey the importance of the Union Club and later University-Union Club as a social center and in the development of the city.
